Golden Visa — Visto Gold
Portugal's investment residence permit. Grants residency rights but does NOT automatically confer tax residency or NHR/IFICI access.
Portugal's Golden Visa (ARI — Autorização de Residência para Atividade de Investimento) is a residence permit granted to non-EU nationals who make qualifying investments in Portugal, typically real estate (now restricted to certain areas and types) or fund investments. A Golden Visa grants residency rights and a path to permanent residency and citizenship, but it does NOT automatically make the holder a Portuguese tax resident. To become a tax resident, the holder must meet the 183-day rule or habitual residence test like anyone else. Many Golden Visa holders are non-resident for tax purposes (staying fewer than 183 days/year) and therefore not eligible for IFICI or NHR. Those who do become tax residents can apply for IFICI if they meet the qualifying activity requirements.
